England's new start under Steve McClaren begun with a confident 4-0 win over European Champions Greece.
Without David Beckham, England's new look midfield was far better balanced. Gerrard took a position wide on the right, with Stuart Downing patroling the opposing flank and Lampard and Hargreaves in the middle of the park.
It didn't take long for sharp passing and quick switches of play to create chances as all four midfielders impressed.
It was fitting that the first goal in McClaren's reign was scored by his new captain as John Terry headed home after 14 minutes.
A deflected goal from Frank Lampard and another Crouch double took the tally to four before half time.
The second half was not as impressive from an attacking sense, but Greece did pose some questions to the England defence, which held firm thanks to some smart saves from Chris Kirkland (making his debut) and Ashley Cole's goal line clearances.
Overall, it was a very encouraging first game for McClaren, with Andorra and European Championships qualification just around the corner, the World Cup gloom is finally lifting over England.
