England 3-1 Egypt

England have beaten the African champions Egypt 3-1 at Wembley with goals from Shaun Wright-Phillips and a double from Peter Crouch.

Capello's team had to come from behind and scored all three goals in a much improved second half performance.

Euro 2012 Group

England have been drawn in a competitive looking Group G for the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign, along with Switzerland, Bulgaria, Wales and Montenegro.

England are, of course, the top seed in the group and will be expected to progress, but there are no minnows in the group and qualification may not prove to be straightforward.

Of course, the competitive nature of the group does mean that England can expect the other teams in the group to take points off of eachother and this should avoid the three-horse race scenario that ended Enlgland's hopes of qualification for the last European Championships.

Terry Removed As Captain

After tabloid revelations surrounding his private life, John Terry has lost his role as captain of the England team. He is replaced by Rio Ferdinand.

World Cup Draw

England have been handed a kind World Cup group and will play the USA, Algeria and Slovenia in group C.

Capello's team avoided the likes of France and Portugal, but could face Germany, Australia, Ghana or Serbia in a potential second round tie.

Brazil 1-0 England

England were soundly beaten in a lacklustre performance in the heat of Doha.

Nilmar scored the winner just after half time, placing a delicate header over Ben Foster in the Englang goal, but England were lucky to only loose by one as Fabiano blasted a penalty over the bar 8 minutes later.

There were very few plus points for England's second string team, although Milner was industrious down the left and along with Rooney was one of England's better players.

England 3-0 Belarus

England have rounded off their impressive qualification campaign with a 3-0 win over Belarus at Wembley.

The match was nothing to write home about, although Peter Crouch did stake a claim to be on the plane for South Africa with another 2 goals to add to his impressive international tally of 16 goals in 17 starts.

England were top scorers in the European qualification campaign and had the best goal difference, with only Spain scoring more points than Capello's team.

Ukraine 1-0 England

England have suffered their first defeat in World Cup 2010 qualification after a 1-0 loss in Ukraine.

Robert Green was red-carded after just 13 minutes after bringing down Milevskiy when the striker was through on goal. Shevchenko missed the resulting penalty but Nazarenko put the hosts in front 16 minutes later when his deflected shot flew past the stranded David James.

With only ten men for so long, England struggled to break down their opponents although they did carve out good opportunities for Lampard in the first half and Rooney late on.

England 5-1 Croatia

England have qualified for the World Cup with a 5-1 victory over Croatia at Wembley.

Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard both scored twice in the rout while Rooney scored England's fifth in a well deserved victory that secures England's place in South Africa next summer.

England outplayed their opponents throughout the game, with Lennon and Glenn Johnson looking particularly dangerous on the right-hand side.

Eduardo did score a scrappy consolation goal for the visitors and mistakes like that will irritate England's perfectionist manager, but eight wins in eight qualifiers is impressive form and can be celebrated up and down the country for tonight at least.

England 2-1 Slovenia

Capello's England warmed up for the World Cup qualifier against Croatia with an entertaining win over Slovenia at Wembley.

A disputed Frank Lampard penalty and a well taken goal from Jermain Defoe secured the win, while a late header from Ljubijankic provided the visitors with something to cheer about.

England looked good in possession and attacked well with Jermain Defoe and Aaron Lennon looking particularly dangerous after their introduction in the second half.

Emerging Trio

Not since Jimi Hendrix played Woodstock, has an England squad featured so many players from the blue halve of Manchester. The names; Lee, Bell, and Summerbee, adorned England teamsheets 40 years ago, while the players were treasured and celebrated by the thousands who streamed into Maine Road each week. Recent selections by the current England manager has made the ears of Manchester City fans twitch once more, as four of their current crop are included in Mr Capello’s plans, the same number chosen from their rivals from Old Trafford. The tide that governs the England national set-up is changing. Gone are the days when monopolisation by the ‘Big Four’ dominated the thoughts of the England manager. Sven Goran Eriksson, and his successor, Steve ‘Umbrella’ McClaren, were renowned for selecting players based on reputation, an aspect that Capello has been keen to avoid, which has led to younger players emerging into the England set-up.

Capello has opted for the bright lights of White Heart Lane, bestowing responsibility to Peter Crouch and Jermaine Defoe to provide goals in the absence of Michael Owen, who has not received his customary ‘arm around the shoulder’ treatment from the shrewd Italian. Fringe players, such as Ashley Young and James Milner, accompany their team mate, the phoenix-like, Emile Heskey, whose England career has been revolutionised since Capello began steadying the unsettled ship of English football just 22 months ago.

Intervention by David Gill, the Manchester United Chief Executive, has led to Dave Galley being denied the opportunity to work with the England squad. Gill feared that Galley, the physiotherapist at Liverpool, would witness the injury problems of Manchester United’s England players, and could relay his findings back to his colleagues at Melwood. Such stories further fuel the fires of the clashes between Benitez and Ferguson, while the later has already resumed his on-going conflict with Arsene Wenger this season. Maybe the ‘Big Four’ of English football should cease fighting between themselves and attend to the threat from the emerging trio that’s evident from the following statistics; City, Spurs and Villa have 10 players in the current England squad while the ‘Big Four’ have just 9.

It remains to be seen whether City, Villa and Spurs can profit from their player’s inclusion in the current England squad. Villa seemed to have overcome their opening-day blip, while Spurs and City will aim to build on 100% records. In a week when Noel Gallagher has called an end to his Oasis career, he claimed, amongst other things that, ‘he’s got a football team to indulge’. Noel’s clearly anticipating that something exciting is happening at his beloved football club, and wants to be there for the ride. All signs indicate that the current Premiership campaign has the ingredients for a close and competitive race, while for the first time in years; it appears the Big Four’s party has gatecrashers with genuine means for attendance.

Holland 2-2 England

England have clawed their way back to a credible draw against the Dutch in Amsterdam.

Early mistakes from Rio Ferdinand and Gareth Barry gifted the Dutch a 2-0 lead at half time, but a Defoe, Milner and Carlton Cole inspired fight back gave Capello's men the draw they deserved.

Both England's goals were scored by Jermain Defoe.

Sir Bobby Robson, 76, dies

The English football world is in mourning today after former England manager Sir Bobby Robson died, following a long battle with cancer.

Robson became England manager after the 1982 World Cup, and failed to qualify for his first major championships (the 1984 European Championships). He did, however, qualify for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico where England lost to the infamous "hand-of-god" goal.

But it was at Italia '90 where Robson's reputation as England manager was cast, when he led a talented squad to the semi-final and an unlucky penalty shootout defeat to West Germany.

England U21 0 - 4 Germany U21

An under strength U21 team were defeated emphatically by quality opposition in the final of the European Championships.

England's lack of experience up front and in goal cost them, as Germany ran out comfortable victors.

England U21s Reach Final

England's U21 team have reached the final of the European Championships after a 5-4 penalty shootout win over hosts Sweden.

It should have been more comfortable for the young lions, who let a 3-0 half time lead slip to 3-3 at full time.

England will play either Italy or Germany in the final on Monday.

England 6-0 Andorra

England are now just one win away from the World Cup Finals after a 6-0 victory over minnows Andorra.

Two goals a piece from Rooney and Defoe and one each for Lampard and Crouch secured the comfortable win over the 196th best team in the world.

Kazakhstan 0-4 England

England's march toward the 2010 World Cup finals continued as they recorded a 4-0 win over minnows Kazakhstan.

Goals from Barry, Heskey, Rooney and Lampard secured the win, but the match could have proved a much tougher test had Ostapenko's 17th minute effort for the home team not been ruled out for off-side.

With Croatia and Ukraine drawing their Group six match, Engand now require just six points to win the group and qualify for next years World Cup finals in South Africa.

Capello's team are now ranked higher than arch rival Argentina.

Cahill In Squad

Gary Cahill's good form in 2009 has seen him called into the England squad to replace the injured Rio Ferdinand for the World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Andorra.

James Milner has also be drafted in to replace another Manchester United player, Michael Carrick.

England 2-1 Ukraine

England maintain their 100% record with a comfortable 2-1 win over Ukraine at Wembley.

John Terry scored the winner in the 85th minute after Shevchenko had equalised Crouch's 15th minute opener.

England weren't at their best but Ukraine hardly threatened and a draw would have been an unfair result.

England 4-0 Slovakia

England have warmed up for Wednesday's World Cup qualifier with a comfortable 4-0 win over Slovakia at Wembley.

Rooney scored twice with Lampard and Heskey also finding the net, but there was a price to pay as Heskey, Carlton Cole and Crouch all left the field nursing injuries.

David Beckham won his 109th cap, making him the most capped outfield player, while Lampard scored England's 500th Wembley goal.

Darren Bent has been called into the England Squad after injuries to Heskey, Carlton Cole and Peter Crouch.

Capello has called up Leighton Baines and Aaron Lennon for the friendly against Slovakia and the World Cup Qualifier against Ukraine.

Spain 2-0 England

England were comfortably defeated 2-0 in Seville by European Champions Spain.

England were second best for much of the match with only debutant Carlton Cole threatening the Spanish goal late on.

David Villa and Fernando Llorente scored the goals for the home team, in in match which was notable for David Beckham's 108th cap, which equals the great Bobby Moore's outfield player appearance record.

Germany 1-2 England

England gained revenge for last years defeat at Wembley by beating Germany 2-1 in Berlin.

The Germans, who hadn't lost a match in Berlin since 1973, were put to the sword by goals from Matthew Upson and John Terry either side of a Helmes equaliser.

Although both sides were depleted by injury, England deserved the win and played well throught a competitive and entertaining friendly. Downing in particular played well and put on his best performance in an England shirt.

Gabriel Agbonlahor made his debut and put in an assured performance, as did the whole England backline, while the central midfield pairing of Barry and Carrick dominated their German counterparts.

The only blot on the performance was a misunderstanding between Terry and Carson that cost England a goal midway through the second half.
